This course meets the requirements for Net Zero Carbon Design for California license renewals.

Free for AIA members courtesy of AIA California. (If prompted, enter your AIA membership number when purchasing course.)

Non-AIA members can purchase this cost for $35 or buy a ZNCD Passport for $90 and select up to 4 courses to meet the required 5 hours for license renewals.

This course explores the transformation of underutilized buildings—offices, churches, schools, libraries, and more—into much-needed housing. With rising construction costs, the climate crisis, and the urgent demand for housing, repurposing existing structures offers a viable and sustainable solution.

Presenters highlight the environmental impact of embodied carbon, the role of adaptive reuse in meeting global climate goals (including the 1.5°C target), and strategies for navigating policy, financing, and design challenges. Experts from policy, design, and finance will present real-world case studies and discuss best practices for successful building conversions.

Upon successful completion of a multiple-choice quiz, a Certificate of Completion will be available for download and can be used to verify your licensure requirements.
